A good wife should be the mistress of her home, having under her care all that is within it, according to the rules we have laid down. She should allow none to enter without her husband's knowledge, dreading above all things the gossip of gadding women, which tends to poison the soul. She alone should have knowledge of what happens within. She must exercise control of the money spent on such festivities as her husband has approved---keeping, moreover, within the limit set by law upon expenditure, dress, and ornament---and remembering that beauty depends not on costliness of raiment. Nor does abundance of gold so conduce to the praise of a woman as self-control in all that she does. This, then, is the province over which a woman should be minded to bear an orderly rule; for it seems not fitting that a man should know all that passes within the house. But in all other matters, let it be her aim to obey her husband; giving no heed to public affairs, nor having any part in arranging the marriages of her children.

Rather, when the time shall come to give or receive in marriage sons or daughters, let her then hearken to her husband in all respects, and agreeing with him obey his wishes. It is fitting that a woman of a well-ordered life should consider that her husband's wishes are as laws appointed for her by divine will, along with the marriage state and the fortune she shares. Such then is the pattern of the rules and ways of living which a good wife will observe. And the rules which a good husband will follow in treatment of his wife will be similar; seeing that she has entered his home like a suppliant from without, and is pledged to be the partner of his life and parenthood; and that the offspring she leaves behind her will bear the names of their parents, her name as well as his. And what could be more divine than this, or more desired by a man of sound mind, than to beget by a noble and honored wife children who shall be the most loyal supporters and discreet guardians of their parents in old age, and the preservers of the whole house? Rightly reared by father and mother, children will grow up virtuous, as those who have treated them piously and righteously deserve that they should; but parents who observe not these precepts will be losers thereby. For unless parents have given their children an example how to live, the children in their turn will be able to offer a fair and specious excuse for undutifulness. Such parents will risk being rejected by their offspring for their evil lives, and thus bring destruction upon their own heads. Therefore his wife's training should be the object of a man's unstinting care; that so far as is possible their children may spring from the noblest of stock. For it is only by this means that each mortal, successively produced, participates in immortality; and that petitions and prayers continue to be offered to ancestral gods. So that he who thinks lightly of this would seem also to be slighting the gods. For their sake then, in whose presence he offered sacrifice and led his wife home, promising to honor her far above all others saving his parents, a man must have care for wife and children.

Now a virtuous wife is best honored when she sees that her husband is faithful to her, and has no preference for another woman; but before all others loves and trusts her and holds her as his own. And so much the more will the woman seek to be what he accounts her. If she perceives that her husband's affection for her is faithful and righteous, she too will be faithful and righteous towards him. Therefore it befits not a man of sound mind to bestow his person promiscuously, or have random intercourse with women; for otherwise the base-born will share in the rights of his lawful children, and his wife will be robbed of her honor due, and shame be attached to his sons.

And it is fitting that he should approach his wife in honor, full of self-restraint and awe; and in his conversation with her, should use only the words of a right-minded man, suggesting only such acts as are themselves lawful and honorable. And if through ignorance she has done wrong, he should advise her of it in a courteous and modest manner. For of fear there are two kinds. The fear which virtuous and honorable sons feel towards their fathers, and loyal citizens towards right-minded rulers, has for its companions reverence and modesty; but the other kind, felt by slaves for masters and by subjects for despots who treat them with injustice and wrong, is associated with hostility and hatred. By choosing the better of all these alternatives a husband should secure the agreement, loyalty, and devotion of his wife, so that whether he himself is present or not, there may be no difference in her attitude towards him, since she realizes that they are alike guardians of the common interests; and so when he is away she may feel that to her no man is kinder or more virtuous or more truly hers than her own husband. And if the husband learns first to master himself, he will thereby become his wife's best guide in all the affairs of life, and will teach her to follow his example.

What do the Fredericks of Hollywood catalogue
and the Theremin Have in common ? Nothing, Unless of course you are me and can draw meaningless comparisons out of a hat.
I spent this weekend composing a song called "totalvo of Hollywood". I am calling the piece "totalvo of Hollywood" in honour of the "Fredericks of Hollywood" of 1977, I kinda wish that I was in 1977 right now. I am sampled 12 seconds from the only known recording of Lev Theremin playing is polyphonic theremin. The song is now 14 and 1/2 minutes long. Many of the means of composing the piece, were first pioneered by Pierre Schaeffer back in 1948, he with out the use of computers, I however used software versions of some of the tricks that Schaeffer used to create us Musique Concrete. I am not quite sure if I am 100 % happy with the music yet.

Poetry Reading

Karla and I performed last night. This was only the second time that we performed together. The last time was 2 years ago in Baton Rouge LA for a conference at LSU. She and I worked closely on this project, working together on both the poems and the music. I think the result is OK. If you would like to hear it please let me know I can send you the MP3.

In this photo you can see me with my two prosthetic brains. I love these little guys. They really make my world go around.

I guess there is a video of the performance as well. The camera luckily was on Karla most of the night. I guess they knew I would break the camera.

I love that when I arrived at the theater to set up there was a piano bench for me to set on. It is really funny to me as most folks do not think that what I do is music so the fact that I was able to set on a bench that was designed for the use with another type of machine was really really funny to me.. It was one of my favorite parts of the night.

This weekend has been very fruitful. I have managed to slow down long enough to not busy myself every second of the day. I have still managed to do quite a bit though. I even went to a movie and watched a documentry and read my third book this week. I might very well be the devil.

5+7 is green. Futurism and the quest for universal language

I had a wonderful conversation with my wife last night about the futurist, I was a little tipsy at the ole brew pub here in town, we had a nearly 3 hour conversation about how the futurists were really the first transhumanist. When I came home from the brew pub I sat down at my computer and started writing what is below. I posted it right away, this morning I read it and I thought man, I must have been drunk. But I want to leave it up regardless, as I am beginning to think that perhaps my life's purpose is to be an example to others on how not to live. In others WORDS do not drink high quality premium beer and try to even begin to construct an argument that you really have no place writing about. I would suggest reading about the futurists though.

I have begun to think of the Futurist, as the original trans-humanists. They were a group of people who at that moment in time (early 1900Âs) had work to upend the Victorian ideals of the time. I am beginning to build an argument of the notion that the Futurists were the foundation for what the neo-romantics of the 1960Âs were working to express, the notion that man and nature and technology can work together to create a new art.

I am writing at this time with little background knowledge of futurism, other then I have read 2 works on futurism. I would like to argue that the futurist moment was a moment to upend the social and political structure of Victorian idealism. Using the very foundation that Victorian idealism was built that of mechanics, minus the Puritanism.

I want to specifically discuss the Futurist fascination with technology at the time in regards to creating music. The futurist in my mind was obsessed with understanding and building a visual and auditory rhetoric. We can begin by looking at zuam poetry, which used the notion of tonal sound to create a Â universal languageÂ. Zaum as well as the futurist notion of music which incorporated noise, worked to created a music that transcended the cultural and political boundaries that were already established. This is a sophisticated idea of the time that sought to work towards a unified identity, the futurist sought to do this through the use of machines.

This ideas have made me wonder : How and why to we attach meaninglanguageauge ? do we do this with sound ? for instance does the sound of the violin have the same effect in terms of how the word violin effects people ? (foggy)

Synesthesia (Greek, syn = together + aisthesis = perception) is the involuntary physical experience of a cross-modal association. That is, the stimulation of one sensory modality reliably causes a perception in one or more different senses. Its phenomenology clearly distinguishes it from metaphor, literary tropes, sound symbolism, and deliberate artistic contrivances that sometimes employ the term "synesthesia" to describe their multisensory joinings. An unexpected demographic and cognitive constellation co-occurs with synesthesia: females and non-right-handers predominate, the trait is familial, and memory is superior while math and spatial navigation suffer. Synesthesia appears to be a left-hemisphere function that is not cortical in the conventional sense. The hippocampus is critical for its experience. Five clinical features comprise its diagnosis. Synesthesia is "abnormal" only in being statistically rare. It is, in fact, a normal brain process that is prematurely displayed to consciousness in a minority of individuals.

I am fascinated by this notion in the framework of the work of the futurist. Who can language be incorporated in the human mind in such a manner? I think it is a wonderful gift. It makes me want to further investigate the idea. I want to understand the cultural and physical dimensions of this ÂdisorderÂ how can language produce visual elements? I recently met a woman who experiences the color green when she adds 5+7 that is so beautiful to me, I can not express my fascination with it other then that most of my research into the history of electronic music has been framed so far with wanting to understand how we as humans process information.
If there is anyone who is reading this, and you have any thoughts on the subject please help me connect the dots.

Click here for this sobering essay written by Tom Wolfe, really useful in knocking the ole ego down a few notches. I have been reading more and more about human machine interaction, recently about man and the machines that make music. I think that this essay has particular validity to some of my own research. I hope after reading the essay you do not feel like killing yourself.
I want to add my own personal note about this essay. I really enjoy reading this essay, I have read it several times. I have the anthology in which the essay first appeared (Hooking Up). I re-read the essay everytime I need to have a reminder that I am nothing special. That I am not the sum of my emotions that they are quantifiable. This may sound cold and sad, I think that it does sound cold and sad. To understand that our emotions, who we are as people is nothing truly special, provides us the lens to begin to work towards making something about us that is "worthwhile" This to me has always manifest itself in working hard to understand, respect the lives, wishes of other people, while still maintaining a careful balance of my own autonomy and selfish preservation. Tom Wolfes essay reminds me that as technologies power increases, that the tendency to quantify increases. We begin to quantify everything in our lives including that which makes us "unique" our thoughts and emotions. This essay is also an encouragement to myself and hopefully others, to work towards creating something of ourselves that is not quantifiable by the powers that be. To not set back with the notion that we are OK as we are, because we are not. We must work harder, day in and day out, to grow and become the person that we know we are capable of becoming. The risks that come with doing this are high, but the rewards are even higher. This essay reminds me that I cannot rest in the confines of a statistical notebook, I think Walt Whitman from A Song Of Myself can express this better then me.

I have not seen the film SATANIC YUPPIES but it looks like it quite engaging. The last time I saw a film of this caliber was back in 2004 it was a wonderful film called the 7 Cigars about a group of vaudeville midgets and their crazed adventures.

Back from Vermont

I am back from Vermont. I had such an amazing time. Now I have to start my research into the History of electronic music. I am currently reading " The Futurist Moment" Marjorie Perloff. I have a 3rd or fourth edition of the book, this edition contains a new preface that she wrote post 9-11.

I have only read the preface to the book and a few pages of chapter one thus far, but so far so good. An engaging book exciting history. What a wonderful period of time.

Literature is a part of life. It is not something “special.” I do not write by vocation. Living is not a vocation. I also have a copy of a book called “Futurist Manifesto’s” which is more in line in my research. Perloff’s book is really a book about the poetics that developed at that time. I am interested in obtaining more a general sense of what the futurist movement was all about. If anyone knows of where to find recordings of futurist music please let me know.

I just picked up this album called Illinoise, by Sujan Stevens. This album is a work of absolute wonder. Please go and pick this album up, it is truly a work of art. I am still obsessed with Neo-Folk music, this album is hard to describe, it is not really folk nor is it any other genre but good music. Think neutral Milk Hotel but a little more mellow, or think Iron and wine but with a little more kick.
If Sujan Stevens had to be described in one word, it would be ambitious. The self taught musician plays nearly all the instruments on his albums, and we aren't just talking guitar, bass, and drums, but also piano, oboe, and banjo, among others. He has also embarked on the elaborate 50 states project, in hopes of writing an album about each.

$120 Billion More Is Sought For Military in War Zones

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 — The Bush administration said Thursday that it would seek about $120 billion in additional financing to pay for continuing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan through 2006.

The request shows that the cost of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan has remained at virtually the same level for several years, despite hopes that a large number of the American troops may leave Iraq by the end of the year.

She has not received her copies of it in the mail yet, so I have been waiting daily for the UPS man to drive up in his little truck and drop it off. I hope you enjoy reading this book. I am so proud of Karla, she worked so many long days and nights on this book. I do not believe that I can accurately describe how wonderful and beautiful this book is, as much of my love and adoration for this woman is wrapped into every part of her being, her love of poetry, the world, life, everything is full of wonder to her (wonderful) and deserves investigation. I know for me, this book captures much of her mind, spirit, and love of the world.

I found this Test on transhuman.org.. Kind of a funny website.. They are mixing genres a little mixing transgender equal rights issues with transhuman issues, which to many transgender people is about the same as saying a trangender person is not human..

My laptap died.. So I had to drive to Philly to have the damn thing worked on. I lost all of my data. This is so so so sad. I lost alot of stuff. O well. I bought a new machine. The New IMAC dual pentium machine. I love this new machine. Buy one if you can, they are worth every cent.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- North Korea once again ranks last in the fourth annual World Press Freedom Index, and the United States drops more than 20 places on this 167-country list.

In the just-released report by the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders, North Korea is in last place in respecting freedom of the press, closely preceded by Eritrea (166) and Turkmenistan (165).

Journalists working for "official" media in countries where freedom of the press is non-existent are little more than mouthpieces for government propaganda, the organization said. Those who step out of line are harshly dealt with. Even a misspelled name, and the author may be thrown in prison or incur the wrath of those in power. Harassment, psychological pressure, intimidation and 24-hour surveillance are routine, it added.

Chinese "discovered" Americas before the EURO's

Map bolsters America-discovery claim

The controversial yet tantalizing theory that Chinese explorers may have discovered America 70 years before Christopher Columbus gained credence yesterday with a new map unveiled in Beijing.

The map is fairly small, only 60cm by 41cm, the oceans faded blue and the continents crammed full of inscriptions and descriptions. In the bottom corner is a couplet which says: "This chart is drawn by Mo Yi Tong, a subject of the Qing Dynasty, in the year of Qianlong (1763), by imitating a world chart of 1418 (Ming Dynasty)."

China is in the centre and dominates, but the shape and scale of Africa and North America are impressive. California is mistaken as an island, Australia is out of place and far too small, but other than that there are few significant improvements in the European maps which immediately followed it.

The map is owned by Chinese lawyer and collector Liu Gang. He told China Daily what caught his eye about the map: "When I saw its appearance, I could see it wasn't contemporary. It must have been 1763 (because of the inscription), imitating another map, but it had the outline of Antarctica. There was something wrong, many descriptions and depictions were inconsistent with common knowledge on world discovery, so I bought it. It was very cheap, only 4,000 yuan (US$490)."

Liu purchased it in 2001, but only realized the potential importance when he read "1421: The Year China Discovered The World," a divisive work by Gavin Menzies, a retired British naval officer with a passion for maritime history, published in 2003.

In his work, Menzies claims that Chinese explorers led by Zheng He (1371-1433) discovered Australia, parts of Africa, the Americas, and even sailed close to the Arctic. While historians bristled at the occasionally piecemeal documentation and tenuous evidence, the book was a bestseller, and has been praised for igniting academic debate into a previously unheralded topic.

In a telephone interview, Menzies told China Daily his feelings when he first saw the map. "When I saw it, I didn't look carefully. I thought it was just a sketch of a map that I had done!"

However, he has no doubts that the map is "absolutely, completely authentic."

"There are several reasons why. There are a number of European maps based on this one, and they would also be forgeries if this were a fake. There is a mass of corroborative evidence, and everything in the map appears in separate Chinese records. Finally, European explorers found Chinese junks and evidence of Chinese people in North America. This shows the Chinese were there first."

Historians from around the globe are studying the maps and evidence provided by Menzies and Liu, but the map unveiled yesterday in the presence of virtually the entire foreign press corps in Beijing including journalists from CNN, the New York Times and the Finanacial Times certainly appears to be the most convincing so far.

However, the fact that this map is only a reproduction of an early work, the whereabouts of which is unknown, means the authenticity is unlikely to ever be fully proved or disproved.

Aware that the map would likely come under immense scrutiny and questioning, Liu said he strongly believed there were other similar maps out there, and he hopes his decision to go public would help "wake up these maps."

The map also raises doubts over the dates of Zheng He's discovery of America, which Menzies claimed was in 1421, but the map shows was prior to 1418. While Liu was happy to put this detail down to a margin of error, Menzies was more candid. "It is quite important. I have underestimated the extent of Zheng He's voyages before 1421."

Liu has no doubt about its importance. He told China Daily: "In the view of historians, Zheng He only sailed the Indian Ocean, but this map gives a completely different picture. It will change Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) history, and change the history of world discovery."

Recently I attended a panel at the MLA ( modern language association) conference. I want to let you know that the new buzz word in the academic world ( which I am obviously not a part of) is: TRANS. I recall a few years ago hearing people say META this and META that now it is trans this and trans that.. Here are some of the phrases I heard that involved the word trans, transpoltical, transnational,transgender,transpersonal, transethnic, transculture, transhistorical , ( I was writing this down), of course of my personal favorite TRANSHUMAN. I really do not have a lot to say about the trans issue other then I thought it was funny to hear trans thrown around like a gilded roll of toilet paper. I am hooked on a new word now that has as it's root TRANS, the word is transition. What a word indeed. So what I am interested in currently is the TRANSition between someone using the 8 track cassette to the tape cassette to the CD to the MP3 player, isn't that something to think about ? I think a person of my generation is one who can actually say that they have used all of the previously mention mediums .I am leaving the LP out of the loop as it is a reference item, something that people always refer, nothing compares to listening to wax, says the cyrptster. A cyrptster is an aging hipster, can be spotted wearing a sonic youth shirt ( with baby puke on the shoulder), wears horned rimmed glasses, dock martin shoes or sometimes chuck taylors, likes to say that they are tired of irony. If this is you please do not be offended. Back to the media issue, so we can remember when CD's first came out and the record labels package the CD's in long boxes so they record stores could place the CD's in the bins that were designed to hold LP's right, and the big stink about how the record companies shouldn't be packaging the CD's this was because it was harmful to the environment, and the record companies saying that they were only packaging to meet the demands of the record stores, and the record stores fought back and said they couldn't afford to change all of the bin's to fit CD's without losing everything. STING of all people was the first artist with bestselling album THE SOULCAGES, who stood up to the record companies and SAID NO MORE, my album will not be released in the cardboard packaging to be fit into record bin's remember this because I was living in Las Vegas the year that the album came out. I used to walk to this record store on the strip, a few blocks down from the old frontier. I was so excited about all of the hype about the album, after reading the review of it in rollingstone magazine ( I did not have much of a life in Vegas) anyhow I raced down to the record store the day the album was released and couldn't find it on the shelf, I was surprised to learn that his album was not packaged in the little cardboard box like the others WOW, sting wanted to help the rainforest and he meant it. This is media in transition, that moment when we switched from records to CD's and did not have a clue about what the fuck to do about how to even sell them. This is something I think needs more study. If we remember back to our good friend Marshall McLuhan who said " We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into
the future."
It is usually after the fact the we realize what we should do have done in the present, so if you want to predict the future learn about the past. So I think by looking at the history of media one can learn about what the next trend in media will be. I think right now that the current casing of the digital camera is something like the faux leather on your car. Why does the maker of the car insist on making the leather look as if it was actually sewn ? It is molded in plastic to look as if there is sewn leather in your car, just plain and simple bizarre right ? Not really if you think about how people would have freaked out if the came into a record store tomorrow and the said "we now only have music downloading stations that you can plug your audio prosthesis(mp3 player) into" I do think that people would have a cow, first one of my big gripes about downloading music (paying to download music) is that if my machine crashes I have no way to back of those files, I could spend hundred of dollars downloading songs from ITUNES (make sure to follow the itunes link)and then crash goes my prosthetic brain ( laptop computer). I think I will concentrate for a bit on the history of music composing software, its GUI and how people interact with the changes in GUI. I also wanted to not that, the same year that Stings soul cages album came out I also purchased among many other albums Sonic Youths GOO, and oddly enough one of the memebers of that band has recently put together a book about the history of the mixtape culture, check it out on the sonicyouth website you can listen to mixtapes that the band put together or tapes that were given to them.

I am back from my travels. Karla and I went to LA for 4 days and then to DC for 4 days. I figured out that we travelled over 10,000 miles in those 8 days. I flew on jetblue for the first time, I have to say I LOVE THAT AIRLINE. If i am going to fly anywhere on the west coast or anywhere jetblue flies i will take jetblue. LA was amazing, I got to see alot of family there and 20 foot waves. Being from the high plains of colorado I had only seen the ocean a few times until recently. 20 foot waves are rare in Orange county CA so even the local people where surprised at the size of the waves. Karla and went to beach every morning around 6 am and watched the waves for a couple of hours. I had heard that Santa Claus surfs on Xmas morning, which I now suspect is BULLSHIT. I had 2 full hours of freetime while I was in Long Beach and I ahd the chance to just sit by myself and read and eaves drop on people ( two of my favorite things to do) I picked up the new WinterPills album which is wonderful by the way, beautiful harmonies and outstanding song writing. I put the album on my pod while sitting at a cafe reading a book that Karla gave me for xmas called Media Ecologies (MIT PRESS , I am forging a love affair with MIT press). I won't go into the book now as I plan on writing a crap load about it. After we came back from LA we went to DC and there we saw our friend Lourdes and Chris and we we to dinner had the Italian food. DC is a great town, this was my 3rd time visiting DC and everytime I am there I find myself wishing that I am a spy. I might have to look into that for a possible job, if there is anyone out there that knows how I can break into the spy biz let me know. I saw alot of "famous" paintings in DC . I think I would rather pose next to "famous" paintings then famous monuments. Saw the Air and space museum as well. The last time I was at the museum they had not hung up SPACESHIP ONE, the first civilian subspace orbiter, when I walk into the museum I almost pissed myself when I saw it hanging in from the ceiling WOW. After DC we trucked back to Selinsgrove, PA. Friends of ours were planning on meeting us in our little town from W. VA and Upstate NY. They stayed with us for NYE , it was so nice to have friends from afar visit us. It really made Karla and I feel like we lived on our little island. Now it's back to theory of human bevhaviour and technology. so if you are interested in the dry and boring theory of Heidegger stay tuned as I will be writing quite a bit about it..
